NHNZ’s Abalone Wars, produced for Discovery produced for Discovery Networks Asia Pacific, has been named Best Documentary Series at the 2015 Asian Television Awards Gala Ceremony in Singapore.
Discovery Channel Australia aired the fourth season of the long running series in October this year.
Garnering a loyal following since the first series aired in 2012, Abalone Wars follows a fleet of fiercely competitive abalone diving crews as they set out into the ocean off the tip of South Australia and risk their lives to earn a small fortune. The divers face death every time they descend into the freezing, shark-infested waters, but that doesn’t stop this group of fearless men and women from scouring the ocean floor in search of the prized delicacy dubbed “abalone gold”.
NHNZ Managing Director Kyle Murdoch says the win shows the strength of the long-running series.
“Abalone Wars has a great cast of characters, who all have a strong relationship with both NHNZ and Discovery Networks. We knew these characters would see more than one season – the risks are real and we have gotten to know the divers intimately, and that really reflects in quality and authenticity of stories in the show. We are overjoyed to see recognition for this series on an international stage.”
