Synopsis:
China's financial and economic hub of Shanghai and its bustling port city of Ningbo lie on either side of Hangzhou Bay. If these cities are to reach their full potential the transport link between them must be improved. This means building the world's longest trans-oceanic bridge over the bay. Before the first car can travel across its 36 kilometres, the engineers and designers must conquer a myriad of hazards from natural gas deposits, to typhoons, and the 'Silver Dragon' - the world's largest tidal bore. This project is so huge, ambitious and visionary it appears to come from science fiction. But the Hangzhou Bay bridge is very much fact: a link not just between two cities, but between the present and the future.
