NHNZ this week appointed Abigail Rodriguez as VP of Development for Outrun the Sun, the company’s new division focussed on character-based content for the US factual television market.
Over the last decade NHNZ has diversified from its traditional natural history fare, creating shows like A&E’s long-running dramatic first person narrative series I Survived… and Animal Planet’s Redwood Kings. With the fragmentation of the broadcast market, and the new digital landscape, Outrun the Sun’s focus will be purely in the United States. While the mothership, NHNZ, will continue to build on its premium blue chip natural history and China content, as well as growing its successful blue clip archive slate.
Rodriguez, who will be representing Outrun the Sun at next week’s Realscreen, is keen to make her mark.
“This is an incredible opportunity to expand on the brand that NHNZ has cultivated around the globe,” said Rodriguez. “I’m eager to begin developing compelling programming for the US market under Outrun the Sun.”
NHNZ Managing Director Kyle Murdoch is looking to Rodriguez to build on the company’s US slate.
“Outrun the Sun has a driving US-creative leading the charge in Abby. She has a real sense of what works, and what doesn’t and also has her hand on the pulse of the characters and access that will make all the difference to Outrun’s success.”
Rodriguez has over ten years of experience in documentary television as a producer, writer, and developer. Before joining Outrun the Sun, she worked in production for National Geographic Studios on series including Monsterfish and Explorer. In development, she worked on special events like Eat: A Story of Food as well as character-driven series, including Snake Salvation and Kentucky Justice, for the National Geographic Channel and Wild Channels.
