NHNZ has received around 200 international film festival awards recognising outstanding filmmaking and captivating story telling. The honors list includes the industry's highest accolade, a Wildscreen Panda, and Emmy Awards.

The Documentary NZ Trust awarded NHNZ the 2012 Outstanding Contribution to the NZ Documentary Industry Award. The award is recognition of NHNZ's work; the employment opportunities it offers; the filmmaker-training NHNZ has developed with the University of Otago; and the company's established international reputation.

A 2012 Realscreen Global 100 Production Company: NHNZ was awarded a place on the prestigious Realscreen list, celebrating the best and most influential non-fiction programming from the 2011 season.

NHNZ was awarded the Cathay Pacific NZCTA China Trade COSCO Business Excellence Award on 12 May 2011. After 12 years of developing business in China, NHNZ has produced 48 documentaries on China that have gone to air all over the world. NHNZ has also done more than any other company in New Zealand to tell stories about this country to the Chinese.

Michael Stedman, NHNZ's Managing Director, was named SPADA/Onfilm Industry Champion in 2009.
The recipient of this award has demonstrated passion and professionalism in making a significant contribution to the New Zealand screen production industry.

A special commendation for innovation was presented to NHNZ by the American Chamber of Commerce (New Zealand) in 2009. These awards recognise trade between companies in the US and NZ. NHNZ was one of seven finalists in the category for exports exceeding NZ$5m a year. In view of NHNZ's achievements the judges awarded their first ever Certificate of Recognition stating that, "NHNZ's world class television production and innovative documentary storytelling keeps them ahead of the competition. NHNZ is an example of a NZ production company taking on the world."

The inaugural International Achievement Award was presented to NHNZ at the Qantas Media and Television Awards ceremony in 2009.
The International Achievement Award recognises a business in the New Zealand film and television industries that demonstrates both commercial success in the international business arena and a commitment to developing a business model that is capable of further international expansion.

The New Zealand Trade and Enterprise Export Awards recognise outstanding achievement and growth by New Zealand exporters.

The Prix Jules Verne, awarded to NHNZ at the Image et Science conference held in France in October 2003. The Prix Jules Verne award recognises the quality of science programmes and a company's quest for innovation in the field of scientific and technical culture and information.
Each year during the International Scientific and Audio-visual Conference (Image et Science), four television companies or channels from around the world are invited to compete for the award by conducting a three hour presentation to the festival jury.
